SUMMARY:Solar Radiation Modification Stakeholder Briefing
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)\, we organized a Solar Radiation Modification stakeholder briefing in Nairobi\, bringing together participants from government\, civil society organizations\, and the private sector to train them on the concepts of carbon dioxide removal and policymaking skills. \nSolar Radiation Modification\, also known as solar geoengineering\, is one of the proposed carbon dioxide removal techniques to mitigate the effects of climate change by reflecting sunlight back into space\, preventing it from warming the Earth. It essentially tries to cool down the planet by reducing the amount of sunlight absorbed by the Earth’s system. \nDuring the Briefing\, it was emphasized that Kenya’s SRM policy must address the agriculture (fertilization and rainfall patterns)\, marine (ocean acidification)\, energy (solar technologies)\, and water sectors. \n

SUMMARY:Mental Health Round-Table
DESCRIPTION:On June 5th\, The World Environment Day\, we collaborated with Dabaso Youths for Green Future in organizing an open Mental Health Round-table for youths to discuss handling depression\, social media\, mental strains at the workplace and love relationship challenges. \nWe are grateful to our facilitators and youth participants who showed up in great numbers and engaged actively to make the session a success. \nIt is vital to destigmatize the negative perceptions on mental health\, particularly among men. Anyone can feel down\, broken\, and fighting against the world. And when that occurs\, remember to speak up\, share your experiences\, and seek help from practitioners.

SUMMARY:Kenya Inter-Universities Policy Debate on Food Security and Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:Food insecurity remains one of the most significant challenges facing Kenya today. In 2023\, over 5.3 million Kenyans grappled with acute food insecurity\, while a staggering 1 million children endured the devastating effects of malnutrition. \nWhile the rights to food and child nutrition is enshrined in the national constitution\, the journey toward achieving SDG 2 on Zero Hunger remains fraught with many obstacles. Additionally\, many experts predict the situation to worsen further\, driven by intensification of climate-related disasters. The frequent floods and droughts continue to wreak havoc on Kenya’s agriculture\, which over 95% is rain-fed. Other contributing challenges include the widening economic inequality\, rapid population growth exceeding 2.9% annually according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics\, and escalating poverty\, which now affects over a third of the population. \nHowever\, there lies a beacon of a hope. If empowered and supported\, young people have consistently shown their ability to provide solutions to the world’s challenges. \nIt is in this spirit that the Policy Action Initiative intends to hold the InterUniversity Debate on Food Security and Nutrition\, scheduled for March 15th-16th\, 2024\, at Kenyatta University. This unique event aims to bring together 300 students from 20 universities and colleges to discuss\, promote\, and showcase sustainable agricultural practices and environmental policies that pave the way for long-term food security.
